Nyxia Unleashed (The Nyxia Triad)

NYXIA UNLEASED, the second installment in the Nyxia Triad by Scott Reintgen picks up directly after the final events of the first book. After completing the challenges and making it as one of the few survivors of Genesis, Emmett finds himself aligning with new peers to make it out alive on this new world: Eden. Caught in between two groups, the Adamites and Babel, Emmett and the rest of the crew must decide which stories to believe and if they can place trust in each other. Their lives are at risk in Eden and the only way to pave their path is to fight what’s against them before it’s too late.

Not going to lie, I went into this one kind of nervous because the first book NYXIA was a thrill ride from beginning to end and I was definitely nervous that this one would suffer from “Second Book Syndrome” but am glad the exact opposite occurred! I will say, the beginning was a bit slow and some parts of the story lagged in random places, but there was so much intense, interesting world-building that needed to be explored, so it didn’t bother me too much.

"I truly wouldn’t change a thing about NYXIA UNLEASHED. Full of a crew that anyone could see themselves in and a plot that won’t lose its grip from page one, this is definitely a series that will knock you out of this world..."

This new story was extremely captivating because we finally got to where the first book was leading up to: Eden. The planet was described in such a beautiful way and it made me want to jump through the pages right into this setting (during the less dangerous scenes, of course). Many of the questions that were asked in the first book were finally answered in the sequel which is not only satisfying but makes the reader even more compelled to read on to the end. The plot only got thicker and more investing as the finale crept up and now I’m left craving for the last installment (like…may I please have it asap?!).

I do think that this book differed a little bit more from the first novel in a sense that this storyline felt a little more plot-based than it did character-based. We still got to read some amazing scenes with this well-rounded, diverse cast of characters but so many wild events happened this time around that the characters were a bit outshined (which isn’t really a complaint from me since I enjoyed it nonetheless). I do think I’m personally more invested in this unique story than the cast because even though there are some amazing personalities in the mix, the plot is extremely one of its own, keeping me guessing at what comes next from the very start.

It definitely leads me to compare my thoughts from this sequel to the first installment. At the beginning, I definitely saw themes from other iconic books thrown in the mixer to create this, but as the story crept on and I became even more invested I realized that this series is something that I’ve never read before in the YA community. I really don’t think you could find a more diverse science-fiction story anywhere else which is something so admirable and can hopefully inspire more stories in the future.

Aside from the previously mentioned slower parts of the story, I truly wouldn’t change a thing about NYXIA UNLEASHED. Full of a crew that anyone could see themselves in and a plot that won’t lose its grip from page one, this is definitely a series that will knock you out of this world (no pun intended). Reintgen has definitely proved his point of being an amazing writer, and I cannot wait to see what else he does next in his storytelling endeavors.
