On the Road to Find Out

ON THE ROAD TO FIND OUT by Rachel Toor is a novel about trying something out for the first time and having it become a positive influence in your life. Alice is a wealthy teen who has always done exceedingly well in school, and she aspires to attend Yale University when she graduates from high school. When she receives her rejection letter from Yale, Alice is devastated. Day after day, she hides away in her bedroom and talks to her pet rat, Walter.

When her best friend, Jenni, suggests they pick New Year’s resolutions, Alice decides to take up running. Never having completed a day of exercise in her life, Alice has a hard time keeping up with it. But each morning, she puts on her jeggings and goes out, determined to stick to her resolution. Eventually, she asks her mother to buy her running gear and together they go to the store where Alice meets Joan. Joan convinces Alice to volunteer at a race she’s supervising, and that is where Alice meets the oh-so-cute Miles. Miles is an amazing runner and has won numerous races. He and Alice form a bond in which they start running together, despite the fact that she has a hard time keeping up with him. They discuss running, Miles’ eccentric grandmother, and why THE GREAT GATSBY is the worst book of all time (according to Alice, at least).

The description of running could make anyone want to lace up their sneakers and start training for a 5K

Alice gets better each day, running harder and farther. She begins working at Joan’s store and gets to know the running community. It distracts her from her consuming thoughts about her Yale rejection --- until the day Alice loses something very close to her and spirals into depression. She can hardly eat, she rarely runs, and she has been avoiding Miles ever since that tragic day. She only gains admission into two colleges, and that makes her feel like even more of a failure. Alice doesn’t know what to do with herself.

So, she throws herself into what she does best: researching about rats and wallowing. After a wake-up call from her best friend and a long talk with Joan, Alice starts to view life with a new perspective. She finally sees she’s been focusing on the wrong things and there are more important things in life. In that moment, she realizes what she truly wants, and when presented with an opportunity of a lifetime, she takes it.

ON THE ROAD TO FIND OUT is a great read. It’s quirky, especially the relationship between Alice and her rat. The romance is fluffy and sweet, just like Miles. And, the description of running could make anyone want to lace up their sneakers and start training for a 5K. This novel is fun and introspective and I definitely know readers will enjoy it.
