Shadowland: The Immortals, Book 3

Sixteen-year-old Ever Bloom’s life changes dramatically in the car crash a few months back. Not only does she lose her mom, dad, sister and dog, she has to move from her home in Oregon to the unknowns of California to live with her aunt. And that’s not all. She begins seeing people’s auras, knowing their thoughts and observing the future. After finally allowing the handsome and mysterious Damen into her life, she learns the unbelievable truth: she, like Damen, is an immortal with incredible powers.

But even immortals have challenges to face. In Book Two, BLUE MOON, the evil immortal Roman casts a spell over Damen. While Ever finds a cure, Roman tricks her into adding some of her own blood to the medicine, resulting in the most horrific of tortures --- Ever’s DNA is now toxic to Damen. With the inability to touch each other ever again, they face an unlimited future without even holding hands. They discover that, while their bodies are immortal, their souls aren’t so lucky. If they exchange any DNA, Damen’s soul will be cast into the nightmare of Shadowland, the complete opposite of the paradise found in Summerland.

While Damen seems able to accept this inevitable future, Ever clings to the hope that Roman knows a cure. But how can she get Roman to divulge the knowledge? A possible answer reveals itself when Ever’s aunt insists that she get a part-time job. So Ever approaches the unique bookstore named “Mystics and Moonbeams.” The owner, Lina, is away on sabbatical, leaving her grandson, 19-year-old Jude, to run the store. Jude ends up hiring Ever, and, while working, she discovers an ancient book hidden away, a spell book with massive amounts of power. Ever digs deep into the pages to find a cure.

Meanwhile, Damen realizes that this horrible turn of events is due to karma. Since he has lived what he believes to be centuries of selfish behavior, he is now being punished. He begins to change his ways, giving up his extravagant lifestyle for a simpler way of life with lots of good deeds. But he finds himself faced with the  ultimate of sacrifices when he recognizes Jude from one of Ever’s past lives, a life in which Ever and Jude were more than friends. Maybe they are meant to be together after all. Will Damen have the courage and strength to walk away from his soul mate?

Alyson Noël’s distinctive ability to pique a reader’s curiosity and never let go perseveres in this third book of her awesome series. One way she accomplishes this is by coming up with new, exciting and completely unexpected twists, turns and twirls of her plot. She also paints her characters with such vivid details that they remain fixed in one’s memory as if they were real people. But the story doesn’t bombard the reader with intensity all the time; Noël lightens the nonstop drama with occasional sparks of humor. Fans will be excited to learn that she is hard at work on the fourth Immortals book, which is scheduled for a Summer 2010 release.
