Sightwitch: A Tale of the Witchlands

Review

Sightwitch: A Tale of the Witchlands

SIGHTWITCH is the newest installment in the Witchlands series by Susan Dennard. Susan is also the author of SOMETHING STRANGE AND DEADLY. SIGHTWITCH is a prequel set a year before TRUTHWITCH begins. The story follows Ryber Fortiza, a Sightwitch sister living in the secluded convent. Sightwitch sisters begin to mysteriously disappear, eventually leaving Ryber alone in the convent to save her sisters and their goddess all by herself. Her journey to save the Sightwitches introduces her to a young captain named Kullen Ikray. Together they uncover a secret that could change the Witchlands forever.

I am a huge fan of this series and SIGHTWITCH found a way to surpass all the expectations I had. It is such an interesting and unique addition to the series. The format of the story blew me away from the first couple of pages. It is written as a compilation of diary entries as well as some letters, poems, songs and drawings. I was not expecting this at all but I had so much fun with it! The reader gets a wide variety of points of view and also gets to join Ryber in piecing the mystery together. The format alone makes SIGHTWITCH stand out from the rest of the series in a special and fun way.

"SIGHTWITCH was truly an amazing adventure and I am now even more excited to continue reading the series."

The characters in SIGHTWITCH, both new and old, were also great additions to the series and the novel itself. It was great to experience Ryber as a main character since she was already a standout as a side character. It was interesting to see how her life played out prior to the events that she was involved in during TRUTHWITCH. The other story lines intertwined with Ryber’s were also extremely interesting. It was especially powerful to watch the individual stories meet and work together to solve the big overarching mystery.

As with the other books in the series, SIGHTWITCH also focuses on a strong theme of female friendship. This is especially apparent with the relationship between Ryber and her threadsister, Tanzi. Their close-knit friendship became a strong motivation for Ryber throughout the entirety of the novel. A majority of the story was told through flashbacks and this was instrumental in developing both the importance and strength of Tanzi and Ryber’s friendship. Female friendships and connections are also super relevant in the convent between the Sightwitch sisters. These friendships are perfectly blended with some romance as well. Susan Dennard is particularly amazing at incorporating romance into her novels in both a natural and beautiful way. This is definitely evident in SIGHTWITCH.

SIGHTWITCH was truly an amazing adventure and I am now even more excited to continue reading the series. The combination of the plot, characters and the world itself create the perfect novel as it is magical, adventurous and relatable all at once. Obviously, I would recommend SIGHTWITCH to any fan of fantasy or even anyone who is willing to try it out! I also highly recommend the rest of the series as these books are honestly some of the best young adult fantasy novels I have ever read.
