Smart Girls Get What They Want

Gigi, Bea and Neerja are best friends and the smartest people in their sophomore class. They dream of Ivy League schools and the hot guys with British accents they hope to encounter there. But they realize that all this studying is making them lose out on some high school experiences. So they each take on new projects they are afraid of in this clever and fun book, and discover that smart girls are destined for adventures.

"The friendship and brains come through for each of these young women. It is also enjoyable to see how they realize that what they thought they wanted may not be the best after all."

When Gigi reads ahead a few chapters for a test, she is sure she will best even the famously hard teacher’s extra credit question. And she does --- but so does Mike, who sat next to her. Both are accused of cheating, but when they can prove they knew the material, a school policy requires that a letter go into their file that says they were accused of cheating. Mike has always seemed like a laid-back jock slacker to Gigi, but she realizes a full scholarship could be riding on his file being clean. She continues to be surprised by how smart he is, as she runs into him at bookstores and other favorite haunts.

One way to change the school policy would be to run for the student representative position. For Gigi, though, public speaking is her biggest fear. She throws up when she has to talk in front of other people, but finds herself running against new student hottie Will. Will seems so nice, and she enjoys a kiss from him, but then he ignores her at school. His mixed messages and Mike’s contradictions make her realize she has been missing a lot of what is going on right around her.

Neerja auditions for the part of Juliet so she can appear in a play and be near new cutie Justin, who she’s been pining after for a long time. When she is given a part off stage instead, she throws herself into it and finally Justin notices her. But as her friends have already realized, Justin can’t keep up with her mentally. Gigi and Bea support her and hope Neerja gets over him quickly.

Bea joins the ski team secretly, knowing her parents’ disapproval after her brother had been seriously injured snowboarding. The team needs one more player to go, and even though she hasn’t skied since she was little, Gigi gamely tries. She is super slow and crashes on one of her first runs. Mike is there to help her up, and Will keeps trying to distract her while she skis.

The friendship and brains come through for each of these young women. It is also enjoyable to see how they realize that what they thought they wanted may not be the best after all. Sarah Strohmeyer, author of such adult titles as THE CINDERELLA PACT (made into the Lifetime movie Lying to Be Perfect) and the Bubbles mystery series, gives smart girls their due in her young adult debut that readers hope will be the first of many.
