Survive the Night

Review

Survive the Night

THE MERCILESS author Danielle Vega is back with SURVIVE THE NIGHT, which follows a girl named Casey who just returned from rehab --- she had become addicted to oxycodone after hurting her knee in a soccer game.  After returning home, Casey’s friends convince her to attend a party in a no-longer- functioning subway tunnel.  One of her friends dies at the party --- whether from a human or an animal, nobody knows --- and the other guests have already gone home. Casey and her friends must find a way to escape the tunnel without losing their lives.

Vega's story was also easy to follow and she delved into each character’s background as the plot unfolded. SURVIVE THE NIGHT was also suspenseful; there are many surprises in the story and situations that readers won’t anticipate.

Vega's novel is a story that individuals won’t be able to stop reading

I also liked how Vega highlighted the complications of friendship in SURVIVE THE NIGHT. Casey’s friends are the only people who don’t treat her like an unstable substance abuser, but they also pressure her to do something that she shouldn’t. Vega also showed that sometimes people we call our friends aren’t actually our friends at all.  Additionally, Vega did a good job showing the dangers of drug use --- SURVIVE THE NIGHT will make even the most unpersuaded user think about getting the help they need to stop.

While the entire book was indeed suspenseful and enjoyable, I was disappointed by the ending. I expected a better explanation of what occurred while Casey and her friends tried to find an open exit, and I think it will frustrate readers who like definitive endings.

Overall, Vega's novel is a story that individuals won’t be able to stop reading, and Casey shows that it’s better to be alone or have one friend who accepts you than a group who pressures you to do things you don’t want to do.  I would recommend SURVIVE THE NIGHT to anyone who enjoys suspense and horror novels.
