The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza

Review

The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza

THE APOCALYPSE OF ELENA MENDOZA by Shaun David Hutchinson is about 16-year-old Elena, who was the product of a Virgin birth. No one believes the truth about her birth, especially when she starts having the power to save people.

Elena does not know she had this ability until her crush, Freddie, gets shot in the Starbucks parking lot and Elena realizes she can heal anyone who is wounded. The boy who shot Freddie, David Combs, magically disappears from the Starbucks parking lot up into the sky. There is no explanation for this except the least logical one: the world is coming to an end. The voices in Elena’s head are telling her to save the world but Elena does not know what that entails. But she is the only one that can do something about it.

"This book was a mix of everything I love; Representation, amazing characters and a thought-provoking plot. What more could you ask for!!"

The author of this book, Shaun David Hutchinson, has written many other books including WE ARE THE ANTS, THE FIVE STAGES OF ANDREW BRAWLEY, VIOLENT ENDS and many other highly acclaimed novels. I have never read anything by Shaun David Hutchinson but after reading THE APOCALYPSE OF ELENA MENDOZA I really want to read everything he has ever written. His writing was so captivating and I found it really difficult to put the book down.

I had heard about this book by many people and when I got the opportunity to read and review I was so excited! And this book definitely did not disappoint. This book was so unique! I have never read anything like it. The summary of this book grabbed me because of how unusual it sounded (unusual in a good way.), and when I actually got to read it, the plot was very well thought out.

This book also had a comedic sense to it and I really appreciated that aspect too! I found myself laughing out loud at things the characters would say. I never usually laugh in books but the things that were said could not keep me from laughing. This book was a perfect blend between funny, romantic and magical.

All the characters were amazing in both a good and bad way. I loved to hate some of them but I loved to love others. Freddie and Elena were both amazing characters and I found myself sympathizing for them and it was so easy to fall in love with both of them.

The representation was also amazing in this book. The main character, Elena, likes girls. Her friend is a Muslim, but he is not just a token character; we hear about his religion and his beliefs in his own words..

Even though this book is in the young adult genre anyone will enjoy it. Every age, race, gender, etc. will love this book and fall in love with the plot and characters just like I did and so many others who have read this book. This book was a mix of everything I love; Representation, amazing characters and a thought-provoking plot. What more could you ask for!!
