The Devil and Winnie Flynn

Review

The Devil and Winnie Flynn

Almost a horror story, THE DEVIL AND WINNIE FLYNN by Micol and David Ostow is written in a very unique way; it’s from Winnie’s point of view, but it’s in the form of a long letter to her best friend, Lu. Winnie starts off by explaining that after her mother’s suicide, she is spending the summer working as a production assistant (PA) for her Aunt Maggie, the producer of a high profile TV show. But this isn’t your average show --- it’s a reality show that focuses paranormal activity, making Winnie’s life much more interesting. Winnie herself does not believe in ghost, but perhaps temporarily living in New Jersey and researching the New Jersey Devil will change her mind. Winnie also learns more about her family --- including things that explain her mother’s sudden death…things that should have been kept a secret.

I loved how the story has many twists and turns as Winnie tries to determine what is fake/scripted and what is real….. If you enjoy suspense and slight horror, this is the book for you.

The Ostows do a great job on this story, captivating readers so they won’t want to let go. I enjoyed the letter format and the pen and ink illustrations made me really feel like I was reading someone's journal. I loved how the story has many twists and turns as Winnie tries to determine what is fake/scripted and what is real. This book definitely plays into the clichés, but it does so lovingly and fully aware of what it's doing. Winnie loves horror movies, so she's constantly pointing out things that people do in horror movies that she does not want to repeat.

THE DEVIL AND WINNIE FLYNN is a story for many. If you enjoy suspense and slight horror, this is the book for you. It was a bit slow for my liking, but otherwise, it was a great book and I definitely recommend it.
