The Lovely Reckless

Review

The Lovely Reckless

After her boyfriend's murder, Frankie Devereux just wants to forget, but being the only witness, she’s determined to remember, despite her PTSD causing her to bar the murderer's image from her mind. Feeling useless, Frankie begins to stop caring about anything, a practice that causes her to get arrested for drunk driving. In order to "help" Frankie, her mom sends her to live with her dad --- an undercover cop. Abandoning her rich life in the Heights, she transfers to a public school in the Downs, where violence and street racing are commonplace.

Marco Leone, the best street racer of the Downs is hot, compelling and mysterious, and Frankie can’t help but be drawn to him, especially when she learns of everything Marco sacrifices for his family. As Frankie gets pulled deeper and deeper into the dangerous new world of the Downs she uncovers more about her past and must learn to overcome her pain, while beginning to live --- and love --- recklessly.

"Intense, relentless and addictive, Garcia's THE LOVELY RECKLESS captures the essence of love through the biggest plot events to the smallest actions."

THE LOVELY RECKLESS by Kami Garcia, New York Times bestselling co-author of BEAUTIFUL CREATURES, blew me away by demonstrating the beautiful tale of falling in love and the intense battle to care about anything after death destroys everything. Garcia developed each character so complexly, leaving me begging to know more after each page I read. I fell in love with Marco's irresistible nature, as well as Frankie’s endless wander to find herself after her boyfriend's death.

For someone who knows absolutely nothing about NASCAR, let alone street racing, I was helplessly intrigued. Garcia explains it in an easy to understand way, and just reading about Frankie’s shop class made me interested in actually understanding how a car works. Besides street racing, adjusting to her life in the Downs was eye opening, introducing Frankie --- and me --- to an intense, more dangerous side of life.

One of my favorite parts of the book was observing Frankie's relationships with others, from her friendship with Lex, Cruz and Abel, to her connection to her parents, or her growing romance with Marco. Her friends bring a splash of diversification to the characters, making me laugh with their unique comments and tones, as well as forcing Frankie, and the reader, to think about her situation from a different angle. In contrast to her friends' behavior, her parents supply restrictions to who Frankie should be, causing her to be more reckless than she might’ve been otherwise, and made me want to join in with Frankie in arguments. Lastly, Marco and Frankie’s love was like an ocean wave, so devastatingly powerful that I was dragged along for the ride. Intense, relentless and addictive, Garcia's THE LOVELY RECKLESS captures the essence of love through the biggest plot events to the smallest actions.

Even though I enjoyed this book immensely, at the beginning the pace seemed a bit slow and slightly predictable, but after a few chapters, I was hanging onto every word, and sped through the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys young adult, realistic fiction, especially romance with an abundance of action and thrill. Everyone should pick up THE LOVELY RECKLESS, and I promise once you do, you’ll never think about romance in the same way again.
