The Similars

Review

The Similars

THE SIMILARS is Rebecca Hanover’s first novel, and it is the first book of a brand new series that combines contemporary young adult fiction with a little bit of science fiction.

Emmaline Chance has just lost her best friend, Oliver, in a tragic death and she is trying to survive junior year without him. The Similars are clones; six people with the exact same DNA as six people at Emma’s prestigious boarding school, Darkwood Academy. Emma wants nothing to do with them, and she does her best to avoid them --- until she meets Levi. Levi is a Similar with the same face as her dead best friend. As Emma becomes more immersed with the Similars and Levi, she discovers secrets long forgotten, mysteries that need to be solved and more lies than she can count. She slowly starts to realize that everyone around her is lying and she can’t trust anyone, not even the boy she is falling for who has Oliver’s face.

"THE SIMILARS had romance, adventure, mystery and science fiction; it had almost everything! It was such a good book, one that is definitely on the top of my list for the best books in 2019."

I loved this book. It was exciting, mysterious, plot-twisting and heart-pounding. As I read, I was pulled into the world of Darkwood and I became the characters. I loved how we really get to feel the pain Emma feels and how we get to connect to her. I also loved how the book isn’t all about the romance, it did have one and it was written really well, but at the same time it was about Emma discovering all of these secrets and towards the end of the book, it’s about her trying to save the ones that she loves. We do get to see some romance, we get to see Emma fall in love, but the book isn’t about that, it also has friendships and relationships with her family.

THE SIMILARS had the perfect blend between all of the characters, and they all interacted beautifully. The plot was also really well written; it was clear and I could follow it without getting lost, and at the same time, I was never bored. Hanover’s style was entertaining, with all of her plot twists that I never saw coming, and a few that I did see coming. Similarly, the characters were well thought out --- they had emotions and reactions, and for most of them I could feel their emotions, they were so real. There were a few minor characters who were a little flat and could have used a little more life in them, but overall, they were very well written.

Emma especially had good reactions and relationships. She had depth and you could tell that she was well thought out. My only problem with her is that she was not that relatable, as most YA heroines are, but I still loved her and she is my favorite character in the book. One problem I had with her was her and Levi, I felt like they were very hot and cold and sometimes I couldn’t tell if she liked him or hated him, but with a book like this, that is almost expected.

THE SIMILARS had romance, adventure, mystery and science fiction; it had almost everything! It was such a good book, one that is definitely on the top of my list for the best books in 2019. If you want a book that will be hard to put down, with the right amount of romance, mystery and characters who you will fall in love with and cry with, this book is for you. It is the perfect young adult book and I am so excited for the next one to come out.
