Whisper to Me

WHISPER TO ME by Nick Lake follows Cassie --- a girl who hears voices. Well, one voice. It tells her mean things, like that she is disgusting and that she should hurt herself and other people. Cassie doesn’t know why the voice tortures her so, however, s
he does know one thing: when she sees him, the voice goes away. It’s like magic. He helped her in ways he could never understand, but then she broke his heart. Cassie wants desperately to apologize. She knows she can explain in an insanely long, slightly problematic love letter. She just hopes that he understands and accepts her apology and meets her at Pirate Mini-Golf at 5 PM on Friday. Then, just maybe, they could start again.

“[Lake] did a wonderful job in WHISPER TO ME….Cassie was a strong female lead who worked hard to get past many obstacles, including her mental illness.”

Author Nick Lake tells a story about love, death and mental illness unlike anything I’ve read before. Lake goes into not only how schizophrenia is diagnosed, but the treatments that many doctors suggest and what, exactly, these varying treatments entail. At the same time, he makes the story very human by speaking through a troubled teenage girl who tries to forget the past in order to move on.

In a world that is becoming more and more aware and accepting of mental health problems, this is a perfect book for a teen to put faces to statistics. Although this book is a work of fiction, Lake has clearly done his research. In fact, in the author’s note, Lake talks frankly about mental illness and where one should go to get help.

I was really interested, as I always am, when male authors take on female main characters in their books. Lake passed the test. He did a wonderful job in his novel WHISPER TO ME, portraying what life is like for a teenage girl.  Cassie was a strong female lead who worked hard to get past many obstacles, including her mental illness. She was not frail, but she was not afraid to cry, either. When she loved, she did not lose herself in the process.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a little bit of a love story, mystery and a very long apology letter.
