White Lies and Barefaced Truths

Mates, Dates series author Cathy Hopkins begins a fun new series called Truth or Dare, about British friends with white lies. This installment focuses on Cat, who is trying to sort out truth from lies in her life.

Sounds easy, right? But what about lying to Squidge, her best friend and boyfriend since they were years younger --- Cat wants to be just friends and doesn't have the heart to hurt him. Her friend Becca wants Cat to help her get the attention of seriously gorgeous Ollie, who is new in town. But Ollie kisses Cat the first time they talk --- should she really tell Becca about that? When Becca and Cat befriend Ollie's sister Lia in order to get to know him, they find a kindred spirit and like her for herself, especially after Ollie shows his fickle side.

At home, things are no easier. Cat's father avoids conversation with his four children ever since Cat's mother died. The siblings would love to see him marry his girlfriend, but he won't talk about it.

Fans of Mates, Dates will find similar things to like in this series, with realistic friendships and British humor, but Truth or Dare may have a broader appeal, with some of the group being boys. Cat's listing of lies and truths she tries to tell are especially funny. Everyone has a hideous hand-knitted gift in their wardrobe, but who really tells their grandma the truth about it? If the eventual breakup between Squidge and Cat and her problems at home get handled too neatly, readers may not mind, as there are many likeable characters here.
